Months of caregiving had left me uninspired. I knew I needed to do something epic to escape my funk. So I challenged myself to do 30 alla prima paintings in 30 days.
This was a significant challenge. I only sometimes work alla prima. I usually work over days, weeks, and even months with multiple thin layers of paint. So I have time to fret and fuss and allow my inner control freak to run amuck.
Not so with these pieces. These were all created on 6″ x 6″ wood panels in one session, using palette knives. The resulting work is fresh, loose, and spirited! I signed each one at the end of each session, even if I didn’t think I was done. And boy, was I glad I did. I have killed many a painting in an attempt to make it better.
I was on fire! I completed the exercise in 22 days, and I’m still painting freely! I recommend challenging yourself to break free from your current circumstances.
Now I’m painting some larger pieces that are still impressionistic and expressive. I can’t put the genie back in the bottle; I am so grateful for that!
Enjoy~
