Looking for a fresh perspective in your work? Want some input on your work but it’s 3 am and you can’t exactly FaceTime your artist buddies?
Try uploading your reference photo into an app. There are several good ones out there. I’m going to talk about two of my favorites, Waterlogue and Prisma.
You take your original photo, upload it into the app and it creates a painting based on the filter you choose. Sometimes it works really great, and other times, not so much.
Here’s the original photo. It was early morning and everything had a reddish tint due to the many fires here in California. I thought it would be fun to paint and also thought it would be fun to see what my favorite apps would do with it.
So I plugged it into Waterlogue and Prisma apps to get some ideas. I don’t paint what I see in the apps but there’s usually a color note or a simplification that I love, and that I can use in my work. The process is like brainstorming with your artist buddies about possibilities.
Here’s a Prisma version using the Frangipani filter.
