This song is a note to self: “Look for the Good”
They say to write what you know. But what if you don’t want to talk about it?
So what’s going on? My husband has several health challenges, and caregiving takes up the bulk of my day.
I have been having trouble writing or painting. Unfortunately, I don’t process life well when I’m not creative, so I decided to carve out time by getting up super early and creating before he gets up.
Usually, when songs come to me, they consume me for days, and I put everything aside until they are done. But this song was different.
Way different!
This song emerged in May, and I couldn’t face it. Every morning, I would wake up with the chorus in my mind’s ear, but I let the day get away from me and didn’t do anything with it.
Thankfully, it was persistent. The bulk of the lyrics came at the end of June. In July, I fleshed it out on the guitar and decided it was better suited for the piano.
“Look for the Good” is a lovely note to self. I’m so glad it didn’t give up on me!
LYRICS:
Look for the Good
By Shannon Grissom
Walker rattle and lidocaine
Some masks on and some refrained
A sea of people bent over their phones
High tide for white coats and stethoscopes
An ancient man docked to my right
Followed by his patient wife
I wondered about their lives, and I guess I was gawkin’
His wife read my mind and started talkin’
She said
He’d ring that bell at the county fair
Hug you after a bad nightmare
Fix anything that didn’t have a prayer
Calm you down when things weren’t fair
You’ve gotta
Look for the good when you remember
I never thought I would be a nurse
Sometimes the worse it gets better
Sometimes the better it gets worse
Look for the good
He fought the battle and hydroplaned
Some mind gone and some remained
A steep hill climb but he’s not alone
She carries his pillows and overcoat
I admired that they kept the fight
For what was left of his life
As their number was called, I guess I was still gawkin’
The wife shook her head and started walking
She said
He’d ring that bell at the county fair
Hug you after a bad nightmare
Fix anything that didn’t have a prayer
Calm you down when things weren’t fair
You’ve gotta
Look for the good when you remember
I never thought I would be a nurse
Sometimes the worse it gets better
Sometimes the better, it gets worse
Look for the good
For richer
For poorer
For better
For worse
She hunts down the blessings
When she wants to curse
You’ve got to
Look for the good when you remember
I never thought I would be a nurse
Sometimes the worse it gets better
Sometimes the better it gets worse
Look for the
Look for the
Look for the
Look for the good
