Huge grin, I’m having what songwriter Jason Shepherd calls a Willie week. (During one week in 1960, Willie Nelson wrote three major hits: Night Life, Crazy, and Funny How Time Slips Away.)
But I digress 🙂
Embracing the Journey is another spirited painting in my Road to Acceptance series

In this painting, a winding path meanders through a vibrant landscape of wildflowers, tangled greenery, and shifting colors. The road isn’t straight. It isn’t perfectly manicured. And we can’t quite see where it leads.
Sound familiar?
There are moments when the path ahead seems clear, when sunlight illuminates the way and everything feels manageable.
And then there are days when the road seems to disappear into the mist.
I’ve discovered that acceptance isn’t a destination we reach and then check off our list. It’s an ongoing process. Some days, I feel at peace with what is. Other days, I find myself resisting reality with every fiber of my being.
Sometimes, all in the same afternoon!
Finding Beauty in the Messy Middle
As I painted Embracing the Journey, I found myself drawn to the contrast between the wild, colorful growth and the soft, open sky.
The flowers don’t grow in neat rows. They overlap, compete for space, and spill into the pathway. There’s a certain chaos to it all.
And yet, there’s beauty everywhere.
Perhaps that’s what I’m learning most from this season of my life.
Life doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
Joy and sorrow can coexist.
Gratitude and grief can occupy the same heart.
We can appreciate the beauty of a moment while still wishing some things were different.
I used to think acceptance meant being okay with everything that happens. Now I’m beginning to understand that acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean liking our circumstances.
It simply means acknowledging what is, without allowing the struggle against reality to steal every bit of joy from today.
Embracing, Not Just Enduring
There’s a reason I chose the word embracing for this painting.
Enduring the journey is one thing. Embracing it is something else entirely.
To me, embracing the journey means remaining open to the unexpected gifts along the way. It means noticing the wildflowers even when the road is rocky. It means allowing myself to experience moments of happiness without feeling that I must first resolve every challenge in my life.
And sometimes, it means giving myself permission to stop, rest, and simply be.
I don’t always succeed.
But I’m learning.
