Every now and then, a project comes along that feels like pure creative magic from start to finish. My recent commission for Phil Drews of Quicksilver Financial Group of Wells Fargo Advisors was exactly that kind of experience — a blend of shared love for the Almaden Valley, artistic collaboration, and genuine excitement.
Phil found my work through Gemini, and in one of those surprising full-circle moments, it turned out that he lives and works in the very place where I grew up: the beautiful Almaden Valley. (I opened my very first savings account at his branch!) That connection alone made the opportunity feel incredibly special, and soon we arranged to meet in San Jose to begin shaping the vision.
Our meeting was absolutely delightful. We talked about style, color, and the kinds of local scenes that resonated with him. He shared what he loved about the valley, and I listened closely, eager to translate those details into paint. His enthusiasm was energizing, and I left San Jose filled with ideas. I couldn’t wait to get back to the studio and paint!
I drove out to New Almaden and took a short hike in Quicksilver Park. There, I shot a ton of reference photos and soaked in the vibes of the area. The excursion brought back so many happy memories.
Back home in Rocklin, I began developing several studies to explore composition and mood, and I sent them to Phil for feedback.

Phil provided valuable direction, and I got to work. Here’s a shot of an initial sketch to give you a sense of scale.

Ultimately, I decided to create two finished paintings rather than one, giving Phil the chance to choose the piece that spoke to him most deeply. I sent him photos of the works in progress, and he responded with thoughtful, eloquent feedback that helped fine-tune the work. The man paints well with words!
When the paintings were finished, I made the trip back to San Jose to deliver them in person. Seeing Phil’s reaction was the highlight of the entire process. His excitement was absolutely infectious — the kind of response every artist hopes for when sharing their creations.
Here are the two finished pieces:

And then came the surprise that truly made my day: he loved both pieces so much that he purchased them both. Today, they hang at Wells Fargo Quicksilver Financial Group in San Jose, CA, right in the heart of the valley that inspired them.
This project was more than a commission; it was a wonderfully collaborative experience that reminded me how deeply place, memory, and human connection can shape art. The process has sparked a brand-new landscape series that I’m thrilled to continue exploring.
Sometimes the world hands you exactly the inspiration you didn’t know you needed — and this was one of those moments.
Thank you, Phil Drews!
