Flower Fairies Artist Trading Cards

Artist Trading Cards

Last month, a group of my artist buddies challenged one another to create ATC’s (also known as Artist Trading Cards). ATC’s are similar in size to sports trading cards. They are tiny works of art meant to be created and swapped with each other. For the back story on the movement, click here.

The ATC’s measure 2.5″ x 3.5″ and can be created on any surface. Strathmore sells an assortment of painting surfaces and I tried them all. After much experimentation, I settled on the Bristol Board. I also liked the Ampersand Encaustic Surface as it holds its own under all manner of pigments and well, abuse.

At first, I thought I would create mini-palette knife pieces. But before I even got started, I was inspired by the spring-like flowers in my neighborhood. So I decided to turn my friends into flower fairies.

Prang!

I used a combination of pen and ink with acrylic paint. I matched each artist with a flower and color scheme that best conveyed their spirit.

The cards above are shown in their trading card cases so there’s a bit of glare. Here’s one outside of the case:

Here’s what I discovered along the way:

The surfaces were inexpensive, so when things didn’t work out, I did not feel bad throwing them away. (I’ll admit I had to re-do a couple of them more than once!)

Painting tiny work was definitely a challenge for me, but it also helped me to really focus on the big picture rather than the details.

This was such a joyful experience and so good for me to switch things up a bit. Trying new things keeps my work fresh!

I’d love to hear about your own experiences with artist trading cards and see your work. Please share your work in the comments.
