Painterly 2-Minute Tip: Self Talk

posted in: Art

So what’s your story? What do you say to yourself when you are creating? What do you say to others?

Is it kind? Is it limiting? Are you paying attention to yourself? When you are creating it happens in your mind first and your body follows through.

What you say to yourself has a huge impact on our creative work and life in general.

Man Putting

My Dad is 87½. Yep. 87.5!  When you get to be his age you totally celebrate the half years once again.

Anyway, he’s back to playing golf after a 7-year absence. I’m happy to say that now he’s playing 3 times a week…more when he can get it.

When he returned to playing he discovered he simply could not hit the ball as far as he used to. He just didn’t have the strength. Rather than being put off by his limitations, he took a look at where he could improve his game and took steps to improve.  He is spending extra time chipping and putting so that if he doesn’t get to the green in regulation, he makes up for it with his short game. He’s doing great. He’s not giving up because he can’t hit the ball as far as he used to. Instead, he is saying, “I will succeed because my short game is so good.”

Do you tell yourself that you can not paint people? Or is it trees? Or blue popsicles? Whatever it is that you think you can’t do, take a class or two or three or four and practice till you can.

Tell yourself you can and you will.  Tell yourself you can’t and well… you won’t!

I used to think that I could not paint landscapes, and now they are among my top sellers! So pay attention to your story and change it if need be.
