Want to set up a still-life but find that dedicated space is limited?
Here’s a great temporary still-life set up solution that you can use when painting from life is not an option:
You’ll need:
- Phone/camera
- Light source
- Cardboard box/painting panels
- Tablecloth/napkins colored paper
- Subject
Camera
Back in the day, I used a fancy digital camera. Nowadays, I just use my iPhone to shoot the pics.
Light Source
You can use the sun or set up some directional lighting.
I like using the umbrella lights that I use for shooting videos, but you could just as well use the bedroom lamp or a trouble light. I’ve used them all.
Containment
I place a cardboard box or painting panels on a TV tray for containment, and to help block out unwanted elements and extra light sources.
Local Color
Next, I drape tablecloths, cloth napkins, or even colored construction paper to add reflective color to the subject. The coffee press above has a red file folder for a background!
Once I have arranged the scene compositionally, I shoot reference photos from many angles.
