“The creative process is a process of surrender, not control.”
Julia Cameron
Sometimes, I pick a fight with my creativity. Other times, I allow it to flow.
I was working on a very controlled commissioned piece. Suddenly, I felt a compelling urge to break free and explore abstract landscapes. Thankfully, instead of fighting, I took a few days off the commission and allowed two pieces to emerge.
The Gambler, (below) I was spontaneous, inspired by a line from the Kenny Rogers song that popped into my mind’s ear as I painted: “…know when to walk away, know when to run.” In this case, I listened to the painting and signed that puppy.

The second piece, “Pathfinder,” was perhaps influenced by my current re-read, “On the Road with Charles Kuralt,” or maybe it’s just the wanderlust in my soul. I find myself obsessed with paths leading to distant, mysterious destinations.

Distant paths are a repeated theme of mine. I’ve always been better at the big picture than the details, and it dawned on me that I should try painting a close-up view of something.
My next thought was, “Nah!”
Anyway, now, I’m back to working on the controlled commission. I no longer feel the urge to break free. The work gives me strength and peace. It feels like an active meditation.
I have learned to honor each piece and only engage with them when I give them the proper energy they deserve.
Do I still pick fights with my creativity? Heck yeah. But as I’ve matured, I’m faster at finding and waving the white flag.

Speaking of inspiration… I read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron 30 years ago, and I’ve been doing the Morning Pages ever since! Her work and that book have helped me tremendously over the years. If ya haven’t read it, check it out!
