Painterly 2-Minute Tip: Painting Multiples Simultaneously

posted in: Painting

Want to explore a new subject but not sure where to go with it?

Try painting several… simultaneously!

4 bell pepper paintings in progress on an easel

For this series I explored overhead shots, conversational shots, crowd shots and everything in between! It may seem like I’m painting a series of bell peppers but what I’m really exploring here is colorful relationships.

For the first draft, I worked on each painting separately to keep me focused on the composition.

After that, all of the other drafts except the final adjustments were done en masse.

By working on several at once I can explore different scenarios without compromising promising starts. OK well most of the time. I’ll admit I took one too far and I painted over it.

Here’s what I found along the way.

– One painting usually becomes the alpha painting, and I work on it more than the others.

– I’m a bit freer in my work and more willing to take chances.

– I get a lot done in a single session

– Working this way gives me a turbo-charged start on a series.

-The finishing is best done on its own without the influence of the others. These paintings shown are works in progress. When I get to the end, I’ll put all of them aside except one, and let it tell me where it needs to go.

It’s a fun ride and a great way to experiment with different scenarios. Give it a shot and let me know how it works for you!
