Today we are going to talk about radical trust. Most children have it. Left to their own devices, children are creative machines! They draw, paint, sing, sculpt, and create elaborate stories. They come up with creative uses for everyday objects that may or may not relate to the original intended use of the object. They are so incredibly inventive, and they don’t question their creativity.
They just do it.
They trust.
As we age, things begin to shift. Some children continue to create all their lives, others are thwarted and can’t seem to get past the bad experiences. And some of us are somewhere in the middle.
For the longest time, I was insecure about my painting. It didn’t look like anyone else’s work. I tried to create “proper” pieces and took myself way too seriously. It took me many years to get back to my child-like way of creating.
How would you create if you knew there were no mistakes?
How would you create if you knew that everything you did was a step on the road to creating something wonderful?
Here’s an unfinished sketch that I blocked in using Acrylic paint.
I applied strokes with a palette knife to the scarf and hair hat are way more expressive than anything I could do with a brush.
I’ll continue to apply these free strokes until I get where I want to go.
Does it always come out the way I envision?
Nope.
But I just keep going until I get there because I trust the process.
Creativity is not a straight shot. I am grateful that I have finally learned to trust.
